What is STEP college?
STEP (Shared Thinking Empowerment Project) is a nine week self-development programme . It aims at increasing community capacity for vulnerable adults throughout Dundee. The programme, funded by the Health & Social Care Integration, consists of 2 hour, weekly sessions using an ‘action learning’ approach, which uses the knowledge and skills of a small group to re-interpret old and familiar concepts and produce fresh ideas.

Our Aims and Objectives
• To engage with vulnerable adults in an informal, interactive learning environment.
• To promote independence, wellbeing and overall quality of life.
• To increase the awareness of services available to sustain good health and wellbeing.
• To address a range of issues that act as barriers to enabling community capacity.

step3How does STEP work?
The process is purely related to group work. The facilitators are there to promote the development of skills, encourage action taking and to ask questions that promote healthy discussions.

We have a flexible ‘buddying’ system made up of volunteers to accompany the service users if needed.

Each session lasts for approximately 2 hours, covering a range of topics, such as; financial planning, effective communication, sexual health, medications and addictions and group reflections.

We encourage all participants to ‘have a voice’ and promote that some form of action is carried out weekly (no participant is required to write anything down or keep notes).

The programme finishes with a graduation session to highlight and celebrate the contributions made by each participant, all leaving with a participation certificate, a personal achievement certificate and a small gift.
